The Remington Model 700 Varmint Laminated Stock Stainless Thumbhole is a bolt-action hunting rifle chambered .223 Rem. The Model 700 was introduced by Remington in 1962 and has since been expanded to include more than 30 sub-models. What makes the VLS models unique to the 700 family is their laminated stock with a satin finish, however, the Model 700 VLSS Thumbhole also has a thumbhole carved into the stock and a stainless steel barrel (like its name suggests).
Remington says the Model 700’s action forms “three rings of steel,” meaning it uses a push-feed action where the bolt pushes the round towards the chamber and the extractor does not grab the rim of the cartridge until the bolt is completely forward and locked. It doesn’t affect the smoothness of the action, but does cater to one’s preference. Some prefer the push-feed action over a control-round feed action (which does the opposite). Also, according to Remington, the Model 700’s receiver was milled from a single piece of steel, so it’ll be more resistant to wear overtime than those not milled from a single piece of steel. A durable receiver is necessary especially when absorbing the force of the initial explosion that sets off heavier loads.
The VLSS Thumbhole is equipped with Remington’s patented X-Mark Pro adjustable trigger system, which has a pull weight of 3.5 pounds with two pounds of adjustment to suit the shooter’s individual needs. What’s unique about the X-Mark Pro trigger system is that it can be adjusted externally. On the muzzle is a target crown that helps maintain barrel harmonics. Barrel harmonics refers to the vibrations in the barrel after the initial explosion sets off the round. Those vibrations can become so violent that they throw off the round’s trajectory. And its stock has a vented fore-end.
Remington recommends the VLSS Thumbhole for varmint hunting.
